The 3rd ASEAN Battery Technology Conference (ABTC) returned stronger with over 340 participants from more than 20 countries, from across continents, Asia, Europe, Oceania and North America aiming to build a strong ASEAN Battery Ecosystem and launch the ASEAN Battery Safety Network (ABSN). Hosted by the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA) in collaboration with five other leading battery and EV organizations in ASEAN, at SAii Laguna Phuket between 27th and 29th August 2025.

The 2025 conference was officially opened by Mr. Samawit Supanpai, Deputy Governor of Phuket.

In his opening speech, Mr Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen, Secretary to the Minister of Industry, addressed the guests and media and shared that “Thailand and Asia are built on regional strength, turning crisis into opportunities. We are accelerating the development of EV’s as we no longer just assemble EVs but build batteries from the cell level up, filling the missing link in our supply chain and positioning Asia as a leader in clean energy. With the launch of our first battery cell plant, new circular waste laws, and regional partnerships, we are transforming trade pressure into bargaining power and waste into value. Thailand is proud to collaborate with partners across ASEAN to champion three principles of future-ready industries: Transparency, Innovation and Circularity. It is my privilege to declare the 3rd Asian Battery Technology Conference officially open, aiming to gather ideas, energise cooperation, and power the future of the Asian green economy.”

Dr. Pimpa Limthongkul, Co-founder and president of the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association, TESTA, said, “ABTC 2025 is more than just a conference, it is a platform where ASEAN’s brightest minds, industry leaders, and policymakers come together to shape the future of energy storage. The conversations we have here will influence how our region manufactures, and deploys battery technologies in ways that are both commercially viable and environmentally sustainable. As ASEAN faces increasing demand for cleaner energy and electric mobility, forums like ABTC are vital to ensure that our progress is safe and forward-looking.”

Dr. Sing Yang Chiam, Technical Director, Singapore Battery Consortium, ASEAN Battery Safety Network (ABSN) said, “The establishment of the ASEAN Battery Safety Network is a major achievement for our region, and I am proud to see it come to life here at ABTC 2025. Through this network, we will be able to set common benchmarks, share understanding in the science and tech of battery safety, and harmonise best practices, enabling faster and safer deployment of battery solutions across ASEAN. This collaboration also strengthens our region’s collective voice when engaging with global partners and standards bodies benefiting the entire battery value chain.”

Dr. Rezal Khairi Bin Ahmad, CEO at NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB), said, “This year’s gathering reflects the growing confidence of ASEAN nations to not only adopt but also to develop and lead in advanced battery solutions. We are building an ecosystem that supports circularity, where waste is minimised, resources are reused, and value is created across the supply chain. By sharing our expertise and aligning our policies, we are laying the foundation for an integrated regional market that can stand strong in the global arena. I’m looking forward to the next edition of ABTC which will take place in Malaysia.”

Other key highlights included a congratulatory speech by Dr. Sumittra Charojrochkul, Executive Director of the National Energy Technology, followed by an opening address by Mr. Pongpol Yodmuangcharoen, Secretary to the Minister of Industry. Prof. M. Stanley Whittingham, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry also gave an honorary plenary speech on lithium batteries and the future challenges for localized manufacturing.

There were several insightful discussions by panelists from the ASEAN region covering prominent topics such as Unlocking ASEAN’s Battery Potential, Future of Battery Technologies, AI and Machine Learning in Battery Manufacturing, Sodium-Ion Battery Innovation & Production Milestones, and Progresses in Technological and Industrial Advances in Battery Systems.

    Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Ceremony

Over 340 attendees witnessed three significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing agreements, reinforcing partnerships and cross-border collaboration:

    • Amphenol – Thailand Standard Swapable Battery Consortium (Swap2Gether): Strategic Collaboration on Standardization of Swappable Battery Packs for Small E-Mobility: Amphenol Communications Solutions & Thailand Standard Swapable Battery Consortium for Small E-Mobility (Swap2Gether).
    • Collaboration on Grid-Scale BESS Deployment in ASEAN: A partnership between Singamas Container Holdings Limited and Zhejiang Narada Power Source to scale collaboration pertaining to development and deployment of grid-level Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across ASEAN, combining advanced lithium batteries technology and integration expertise in containerized solutions to boost reliability, safety performance and grid stability.
    • Strategic Alliance for Euro-Grid Infrastructure Enhancement – Establishment of the Sineuro Collaborative Platform: Bringing together Asian innovation and European expertise to co-develop intelligent application-based energy storage solutions, aiming to scale sustainable infrastructure and accelerate Europe’s clean energy transition. Parties include NextGEN Energy, Sineng Electric, Green Tenaga, Half Bridge Automation.
    • Strategic Cooperation Agreement between Hytzer Energy and INV Corporation: This Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishes a collaborative framework between Hytzer Energy and INV Corporation to jointly advance the development and commercialization of solid-state battery technology. The Parties aim to leverage their combined expertise and resources to drive innovation for safer battery solutions with higher capacity, fostering the “net-zero” energy transition for a sustainable future.
    • NBRI and NMB – Strengthening Regional Battery Innovation:

The MoU between the National Battery Research Institute (NBRI), Indonesia, and NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB), Malaysia, marks a strategic milestone in advancing Southeast Asia’s battery ecosystem. This partnership goes beyond a symbolic agreement by establishing a framework for cooperation in technology transfer, research and innovation, testing and standardization, as well as education and industrial training, aimed at strengthening the regional battery ecosystem and accelerating the adoption of next-generation energy solutions across ASEAN.

    Key Strategic Announcements

    • Launch of collaborative whitepaper on Battery Landscape and Ecosystem in ASEAN
An Inaugural whitepaper, “Navigating the Battery-Related Landscape in Southeast Asia and Beyond,” jointly authored by six ASEAN entities and two contributing organisations, provides a strategic deep dive into the region’s fast-evolving battery, EV, and energy storage ecosystem offering a timely and in-depth analysis of the battery, electric vehicle (EV), and battery energy storage system (BESS) sectors across the ASEAN region and Australia.

Themes explored in the whitepaper include:
